 Nose Job Guide Download

Tip Rhinoplasty is a nose reshaping surgery that specifically targets nasal tip problems.

Beauty is all about proportion. This is why having a nose that does not go with the rest of your face might be unflattering for your look. However, this is also why a nose job can completely alter your appearance.

Tip plasty specifically deals with nasal tip problems causing cosmetic disproportion. If you have either a boxy nasal tip, droopy tip, round tip, round nose, or bulbous tip, then nose tip correction is for you.

Dr Stephen Kleid offers tip plasty to all patients looking to improve the way they look. Armed with decades of experience in ear, nose, and throat (ENT) surgery, Dr Kleid is now one of the top tipoplasty surgeons not only in Melbourne but in Australia.

The cosmetic goals of tip plasty surgery

  1. To make the nasal tip proportionate in size with the rest of the nose and the face
  2. To produce a natural smooth curvature that doesn’t look out of place
  3. To achieve a proper angle between the nose and lips (usually around 90° in men and 100° in women)

What is Tip Plasty?

Other terms for this procedure include Tip rhinoplasty, tipoplasty, tip plasty, nasal tip enhancement, nasal tip correction, and also nasal tip rotation.

Technically, tip plasty is just a regular nose job for people that specifically have tip problems. This procedure can either be done alone or in conjunction with other rhinoplasty techniques. However, this depends on what each patient wants to fix.

For example:

  • If you have a droopy nasal tip, but the rest of your nose is normal, then you only need a tipplasty.
  • If you have a droopy nasal tip with a large nose hump, then you need tip plasty combined with other techniques as part of your nose job.

Tip enhancement surgery aims to reshape the tip of your nose to:

  • Make the nasal tip narrower
  • Make the nasal tip wider
  • Lift the nasal tip up
  • Pull the nasal tip down
  • Contour the nasal tip
  • Make the nasal tip smaller
  • Make the nasal tip bigger and rounder

For this purpose, Dr Kleid uses surgical techniques that are customized according to both the anatomy and needs of each patient. He might remove tissue, reshape it, alter it, or implant cartilage to change how your tip looks. This all depends on your cosmetic goals, as well as, your natural anatomy.

What Does Tip Rhinoplasty Fix?

There are many cosmetic problems related to the nasal tip. First, to understand, let’s talk a little about the anatomy of the nasal tip.

The nasal tip is the most outer projecting part of your nose. It is made of cartilage and covered with skin. Cartilage is the firm flexible part of your nose.

The sides of your nostrils are called the “alae” and the middle column separating the two nostrils is called the “columnella”.  Inside your nose, separating the two nasal cavities is the “nasal septum”.

All of these play a role in determining how the tip of your nose looks, they can also all be targeted in tip plasty.

In general, here are the nasal tip deformities that can be fixed with nasal tip refinement.

  • Droopy nasal tip
    • This is when the tip is drooping down. In extreme cases, it can look like a parrot’s beak.
    • In some patients, the nose droops down especially when they smile or laugh, giving them an unpleasant look.
    • A tip plasty can lift your nasal tip.
    • Some people call this a “nose tip lift”
  • Over projecting nasal tip
    • This is when the tip of your nose is projecting forward too much.
    • Somes it is also refer to as a “Pinocchio nose”.
    • This is called “nasal tip reduction”.
  • Under projecting nasal tip
    • This is when the nasal tip is not projecting enough in front of the face.
    • This might include a combination of both a nasal tip lift and augmentation.
  • Bulbous nasal tip:
    • This is when your nose tip is too round and large in proportion to the rest of the nose.
    • Tip plasty with nasal tip reduction is the treatment of choice, in these situations.
  • Boxy nasal tip
  • This is when the nasal tip is both wide and has a boxy shape instead of having some “pointiness”.
  • Reducing the tip of the nose and also resculpting it can give you a more “pointy” nose.
  • Pointy nasal tip
    • This is when the tip of your nose is not only too sharp but also too narrow.
    • Surgical manipulation along with a nasal tip graft can augment the tip of your nose, making it wider.
  • Small nasal tip
    • A small nasal tip can be augmented with a cartilage graft, which can be taken from either the ribs or ears.
  • Narrow nasal tip
    • Dr Kleid can give your nasal tip a more pronounced curvature by implanting cartilage during tipoplasty.

Who is a Candidate for Tip Plasty?

Nasal tip correction surgery is for you if you:

  • Feel like your nose is stealing focus from other parts of your face
  • Feel like your nose is not proportionate with the rest of your face
  • Are unhappy with how your nose looks
  • Feel like the tip of your nose is either too big, wide, narrow, or drooping
  • Are ready to embark on a journey to change the way you look
  • Are ready to take 1-2 weeks off work to recover
  • And finally, if you are 16 years or older

If this sounds like you, then nasal tip enhancement is for you. You can get tip plasty as part of a more extensive nose job or alone with Dr Kleid.

How is Tip Plasty Done?

Dr Kleid will talk to you about anesthesia choices before surgery.

To access the cartilage and deeper nasal tip tissue, Dr Kleid will use one of two tipoplasty techniques:

  • Closed technique: no skin incision. The incision is inside the nostril, and through it, the nasal tip cartilage will be manipulated.
  • Open technique: a skin incision will be made right under the columnella (between the nostrils)

The type of tip plasty incision is determined by how extensive your surgery is, what your goals are and also, what exactly you need done. After accessing the nasal tip cartilage, Dr Kleid will do one or more of the following to reshape the tip of your nose:

  • Remove cartilage to reshape the curvature, reduce the nose tip, or fix bulbous and boxy nasal tip appearance
  • Implant cartilage (taken from either the ribs or ear) to give your tip more curvature, more volume, and fix pointy nose deformity
  • Physically manipulate the existing nasal tip cartilage to sculpt it into a new form
  • Alter the alar cartilage, columnella, and/or nasal septum to control both the volume and shape of the nasal tip.

Dr Kleid will perform a combination of surgical maneuvers to lift your nose and reshape the nasal tip just the way you want it. The goal is to make subtle, but strategic changes, to give you a perfect nasal tip.

After surgery, your nose might be packed with gauze to stabilize the wounds.

Recovery After Tip Rhinoplasty

Tipoplasty recovery is usually less demanding than a full rhinoplasty which contains other components (namely, trauma to nasal bones).

This translates to not only less pain and swelling, but also less bruising, which in turn means less recovery time.

Full recovery after tip plasty can take 2-3 weeks, however, you can often return to work after only 3-5 days, depending on your job and how physically demanding it is.

In general, you should avoid intense sports, contact sports, scratching your nose, and any trauma to your nose during the recovery period. You should also expect your symptoms to peak 2-3 days after your nose reshaping surgery, and then start to subside.

By 2-3 weeks, you should have minimal symptoms and can enjoy the results of your tipoplasty!

Keep in mind that minimal swelling might linger for a few more months. Therefore it will take time before the full and final look is visible.
