Rhinoplasty, septoplasty. Before and after correction

Each year, thousands of Australian men and women of all ages choose to get rhinoplasty – nose reshaping surgery.

It is one of the most common cosmetic surgeries around the world. However, the goal is not always cosmetic. Sure, a nose job can give you a perfectly shaped nose, but it can also heal breathing problems.

You might not realize it, but your nose shape greatly affects your overall look. Even though it’s only a small organ, it can alter your whole appearance. Fixing either a crooked nose, big nose, wide nostrils, pointy tip, or droopy tip can make you look like a new person.

Dr Kleid is one of the best and most experienced rhino surgeons in Melbourne. During his time working as a specialist ENT surgeon, he’s developed unique techniques to give his patients the perfect nose they’ve always wanted.

What is Rhinoplasty?

Other terms for Rhinoplasty include a nose job, nose surgery, nose reshaping surgery, or rhino. The focus of this surgery is often to change the shape of the nose, however, it also deals with breathing problems. Below is a list of things a Rhinoplasty can help you achieve;

  • Cosmetic problems
    • Large size
    • Overprotection
    • Asymmetry
    • Either a droopy tip or boxy tip
    • As well as, wide or flaring nostrils
    • It can also fix other problems that might not be cosmetically flattering
  • Breathing problems
    • Narrow nostrils
    • Nasal airway obstruction
    • Septal deviation
    • As well as, other physical nose problems that might be making breathing difficult for you.

Rhinoplasty is not one single standard surgery with standard steps. Every nose has a unique composition and shape, and because of this every patient wants and needs different things. A nose job is a highly customizable surgery.

This means that for each person, a nose job can contain a combination of different steps in order to treat the patient’s specific problems.

Who Needs Rhinoplasty?

There are many reasons to get a nose job, and they differ from one person to another. If you feel like you need a nose job, then you probably should get a nose job.

You are a good candidate for a nose job if you:

  • Think your nose looks big.
  • Are unhappy with the shape of your nose.
  • Think your nose looks either asymmetrical or crooked.
  • Wish to improve the way you look.
  • Have nose problems that restrict your breathing.
  • Are at least 16 years of age.
  • Are ready to deal with a few weeks of recovery.
  • Its also important that you are undergoing the procedure for yourself, not someone else.

If these apply to you, then you’re a perfect candidate for rhinoplasty.

What Does Rhinoplasty Fix?

A nose job can fix the following nose problems:

  • Dorsum problems: the dorsum is the “bridge” of the nose. It’s the middle slope. Surgery can fix a hump or an overprotecting, under projecting, or saddling dorsum.
  • Tip problems: the tip is a critical part of the nose. Surgery can fix a boxy, bulky, large, droopy or pointy tip.
  • Nostril problems: if your nostrils are narrow, flaring (snarling), or are too wide, then they can be fixed with nose reshaping surgery.
  • Breathing problems: a deviated septum, airway narrowing, or large turbinate’s can be treated with a nose job.

Most patients don’t have a single problem with their noses. A nose job, however, can target all the above-mentioned problems at once – just a single nose surgery!

What are the Benefits of Rhinoplasty?

There are so many advantages to rhinoplasty, there’s a reason its one of the most popular surgeries in our practice. Below is a list of rhinoplasty benefits:

  • Dramatically changes the way you look.
  • Gives you self confidence and also helps deals with a negative body image.
  • Gives you a nose in perfect harmony with the rest of your facial features.
  • Fixes deformities, asymmetry, and also unappealing nose features.
  • Your nose will have a great profile – no over projection, drooping, or snarling visible from the sides.
  • Minimal surgical risks.

We cannot stress enough how dramatically a nose job changes your look. It’s hard to believe that such a minor body part can have such a big effect on how your face looks. But it does!

How is Rhinoplasty Done?

Nose reshaping surgery can be done under either general or local anesthesia. However, Dr Kleid often prefers general Anesthesia.

There are 2 nose job techniques that Dr Kleid will choose from:

  • Open rhinoplasty: this means that there will be a skin incision right under your nose (under the columnella).
  • Closed rhinoplasty: this means that the incision will be done inside your nose, there is no outer skin incision, which also means no external scarring.

Either way, a rhinoplasty incision will not leave an obvious scar.

Depending on the shape of your nose and the goal of your rhinoplasty, Dr Stephen will perform a combination of the following:

  • Rub the nasal bone to sculpt it.
  • Break a piece of the nasal bone and remove it.
  • Alter the shape of the cartilage (the soft-firm tissue) in your nose to change its shape.
  • Cut out a piece of cartilage.
  • Implant cartilage to augment your nose (or specific parts of it).
  • Use prosthetic nasal implants.
  • Straighten your nasal septum.
  • Remove any enlarged turbinates obstructing airflow.

How long a rhinoplasty takes depend on multiple factors, including how much there is to do. You can expect it to last anywhere from 1 to 3 hours.

Normal Recovery-after Nose Surgery

How is Recovery After a Nose Job?

The recovery period after rhinoplasty might be uncomfortable during the first couple of weeks. You will experience several annoying symptoms:

  • Pain: A nose job can be painful, however, the pain is usually well handled with medications. In general, the first 3-4 days after rhinoplasty are usually the most painful.
  • Swelling: either nose swelling, eye swelling, or general facial swelling are probably the most annoying part of rhino recovery. This is because it obscures the result of your nose job for a few weeks. Most of the swelling subsides by 1 month of rhinoplasty, however, a residual stubborn amount might remain for up to 1 year.
  • Bruising: Black-red bruises will appear both under your eyes and around your nose after rhino. Although these will gradually fade away, bruising needs 2-3 weeks to completely dissipate after surgery.
  • Itching: Your nose might itch during the rhinoplasty recovery period. However, you should do your best to avoid violently scratching your nose, extremely gentle scratching is okay.
  • Minor bleeding: You might experience blood spotting or drip from your nose after your rhinoplasty. This is normal as long as it’s minimal and not continuous.

After rhinoplasty, you might have gauze packed in your nostrils. The nasal packing usually remains for 2-3 days after your surgery.

Moreover, you will have either a nasal splint or several layers of nasal tape on your nose. These are usually kept for 1-2 weeks after a nose job.

How Much Does Rhino Cost?

Putting a price tag on a nose job is very difficult. As explained above, a nose job is very customizable and differs greatly from one person to another.

A person getting just tip rhinoplasty will pay less than someone getting nose surgery to reduce the size, change the nostril shape, and fix the nasal septum altogether. This is why Dr Kleid only gives a quote to his patients after seeing them in his Melbourne office.

In general, our patients find that rhinoplasty is affordable and has a great value for money. In any case, we have several financing options to pay for rhinoplasty without a hassle in Melbourne.
